Cathedral Basilica of St Louis

There are two Catholic Cathedrals in St. Louis.  The older, smaller one is adjacent to the Gateway Arch while the newer larger one is located about four miles west on Lindell Boulevard.  The cornerstone for the newer building was laid in 1908 and the building was dedicated in 1914.  Construction of the 83,000 square feet of mosaics continued until 1988.  The cathedral was designated a basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1997.  We visited in July, 2014.

The Basilica also houses a museum in the basement.  A donation of $2 per person is recommended.
