North Carolina side of Newfound Gap Road in Winter - Great Smoky Mountains National Park
We were back in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in late December 2016, one month after the wildfire swept down from the Chimney Tops and ravaged Gatlinburg. We chose not to stop to view the destruction, but drove Newfound Gap Road over to Cherokee. Once on the North Carolina side of the park, we stopped at several overlooks along Thomas Ridge to see the mountains and then continued to the Oconaluftee Visitor Center to hike the 1.5 mile Oconaluftee River Trail.
Entry to Great Smoky Mountains National Park is free.
The park website is https://www.nps.gov/grsm.
