South Unit Visitor Center - Theodore Roosevelt National Park

Unlike the other visitor centers in Theodore Roosevelt National Park, the South Unit Visitor Center is open year round. It houses the usual information desk, bookstore/giftshop, a museum, restrooms, and a theater with seating for about fifty. The excellent 17-minute production Refuge of the American Spirit is replayed every half hour. It tells the story of Roosevelt's time of mourning in the Dakota Territory after the deaths of his wife and mother on the same day. Narrated by Terry Tempest Williams, it weaves the future president's story of resiliency into that of the of the land and its flora and fauna through the seasons. The museum includes exhibits on history, nature, geology, and Theodore Roosevelt.
