Chicago hosted A Century of Progress International Exposition in 1933 to commemorate the centennial of the city. The World's Fair was so popular that its operation was extended into 1934. In 1935, developer Robert Bartlett transported five houses from the Homes and Industrial Arts exhibit by barge and truck to Beverly Shores. Even during the depths of the Great Depression, Bartlett was developing a resort community on the Indiana shore of Lake Michigan. Those five houses now constitute the Century of Progress Historic District in Indiana Dunes National Park. We visited in late October 2019.

Entry to Indiana Dunes National Park is free. However, an expanded amenity fee of $6 daily is collected at West Beach from the Friday of Memorial Day weekend through the Monday of Labor Day weekend from 8:00 am to as late as 7:00 pm Central Time. This fee is used to provide the bathhouse and lifeguard service.
