While once numbering about two million, only about 20,000 bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) remained in the US in 1940. After much work by conservationists, today there are about 80,000. A small herd of twenty-two bighorn sheep was re-introduced to the badlands in 1964. Forty years later another group was translocated to the park. Today, a herd of about 250 bighorn sheep resides in Badlands National Park.
We saw a few of them near Badlands Loop Road during our May 2021 visit to the park.
A Badlands National Park entry fee of $30 per vehicle, $25 per motorcycle, or $15 per person is valid for seven consecutive days. Other fee payment options include the America the Beautiful - National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands passes including the Annual Pass ($80), Senior Pass ($80 for a lifetime), Access Pass (free with a documented disability), and Military Annual Pass (free for active-duty personnel). Also available is a Badlands Annual Pass for $55.
