During part of our August 2013 visit to Redwoods National and State Parks, we stayed in Crescent City, California. While looking for a place to view the ocean, we found a parking area on South Pebble Beach Drive across from the Brother Jonathon municipal park. The offshore rocks are part of the California Coastal National Monument. From this parking area, we had a good view of the Saint George Reef Lighthouse to the northwest. This lighthouse is located six miles offshore and was the most expensive lighthouse ever built in the United States. We also had some great views of the Battery Point Lighthouse from this location. The waves washing up on the pebbles create a much different sound than waves crashing into rocks or washing up on sandy beaches. Due to the number of birds in the area, parking under one of the three streetlights is not recommended. In addition, wearing a hat of some type is a good idea.
