Galleries - Cracking Art - Cheekwood Estate and Gardens

Posted on the upper hallway wall is the following description of the Cracking Art exhibition:
Cheekwood is excited to present the work of the Italian artist collective, Cracking Art, in a monumental, site-wide exhibition that takes over both the museum and gardens.
Based in Milan, Italy, Cracking Art examines the split between the natural and synthetic worlds. Their manifesto uses “cracking” as a verb and states that “cracking is the gap of the contemporary man, struggling between the primary naturalness and a future becoming more and more artificial.” Without the process of “cracking,” the stripping away of the petroleum to create recycled materials, these works would look like plastic bottles and trash throughout our galleries and gardens.
Cracking Art’s signature animals are made of vividly-colored, recycled plastic, merging the real and artificial. The group views its work as an ethical necessity in the face of environmental ruin.
The work of Cracking Art has been presented around the world and, in each instance, a site-specific dialogue is created between the animals and their surroundings. Encountering the bold works at Cheekwood reminds visitors of the importance of recycling and its environmental impact. With more than 4,200 artworks made of recycled plastic, we hope this exhibition will help build awareness of our responsibility to recycle.
We visited in early September 2018.

Admission to Cheekwood is $22 for an adult. A one-year membership is $65. Other ticket options are available.
