To reach the Kipahulu District of Haleakalā National Park from Kahului requires driving from Kahului to Hāna on Routes 36 and 360 and then driving an additional twelve miles to the park. The 61 mile trip takes nearly 2½ hours without any stops or having to wait for oncoming traffic. The section of the route from mile marker 3 to Hāna has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During our February 2014 visit to Maui, our first stop along the Hāna Highway was near mile marker 9 on Route 36 at the Ho' okipa Lookout and Beach Park.
