The Kalahaku Overlook is only accessible while descending from the summit of Haleakalā. This restriction is due to the location of the access drive being in the middle of a sharp switchback turn with no visibility in the uphill direction. We stopped at the 9324 foot vista on our February 2014 trip to Maui.
