Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System

While traveling south on I-15 from Las Vegas to the Mojave National Preserve in February 2015, we noticed a couple of towers northwest of the interstate just across the California state line. A quick exit led us to the Stateline Solar Farm, a utility-scale concentrating solar project. The project generates 377 megawatts of electrical power. This power is produced by 347,000 heliostats reflecting sunlight on to one of three towers over the 3,500 acre site. The project cost more than $2 billion to develop and came on line in phases begining in . The sunlight turns the water in the tower into steam that drives turbines that spin generators to make electricity.
