The Tepees - Petrified Forest National Park
From Newspaper Rock, we continued driving south on Park Road about two miles (or about 14 miles from the north entrance) until we came to The Teepees. Parallel parking is available on both sides of the road on the wide shoulders. The rocks exposed here are some of the oldest in the park. The Blue Mesa Member of the Chinle Formation is composed of layers of grey, blue, purple and green mudstones capped with more erosion resistant sandstone. We stopped during our May 2015 visit to Petrified Forest National Park. Since the individual formations are not formally named, there are no captions for the images below.
An entry fee of $10 per private vehicle is good for seven consecutive days. Other fee payment options include the America the Beautiful - National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands passes including the Annual Pass ($80), Senior Pass ($10 for lifetime), Access Pass (free with documented disability) and Military Annual Pass (free for active duty personnel).
The park website is http://www.nps.gov/pefo/index.htm.
