Ernest Oberholtzer has been called the father of Voyageurs National Park. He came to the region in 1909 and promoted its preservation for decades before the national park was established in 1975 when he was in his 90s. The Oberholtzer Trail is a small tribute to his legacy.
The entire trail is a 1.7 mile round trip hike. The first ¼ mile is ADA compliant and makes a nice ½ mile round trip stroll. The trail starts from the walkway between the Rainy Lake Visitor Center and the Voyageur boat dock. We hiked the ADA compliant portion during our early August 2017 visit to the park.
