Gates of the Arctic National Park, the least visited national park with only 7,362 recreational visitors in 2021, is also the northernmost park. We arrived by bush plane and only had a few minutes on the ground, but the scenery is beyond breathtaking. We landed on a gravel bar in the Ambler River below the Schwatka Mountains in the far southwest corner of the park. One oddity I noticed is that almost every creek, brook, stream, and river was named, but very few of the mountains were named. We visited in late August 2022.
