Brooks Falls Hike Part 2 - Gravel Road - Katmai National Park

The second leg of the hike to Brooks Falls is the gravel road. This road begins at the south end of the boardwalk and continues 23 miles southeast to the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. Hiking to Brooks Falls only requires walking the first 0.3 miles of the road. This is still bear country, so staying vigilant is required, but the bears seem to stay near their food source of salmon in the river. We didn't encounter any bears on our road walk. Most of the route is through the woods, but the road does cross a wetland area with views to both sides of the road. A portable toilet has been placed on the south side of the road near the Brooks Falls trailhead.
